2006 National Magazine Awards - Highlights

The 40^th anniversary celebration of ASMEs National Magazine Awards took place May 9, at Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City. It was attended by more than 1,000 editors, publishers, industry professionals and guest. The Ellies (named after the Alexander Calder Stabile Elephant, which is ASMEs symbol of the award) were presented to 14 print and online magazines across 22 categories.

The opening cocktail reception was held in the Allen Room (pictured), with its floor-to ceiling windows and dramatic view of Columbus Circle and Central Park, and in the Atrium.

Acclaimed trombonist Wycliffe Gordon (standing, second from left) led a seven-piece New Orleans band in a rousing performance through Rose Hall to open the show

Mark Whitaker, outgoing President, ASME and Editor, Newsweek; Marlene Kahan, Executive Director, ASME; jazz legend Wynton Marsalis; and Cindi Leive, incoming President, ASME and Editor-in-Chief, Glamour. Marsalis, Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, welcomed the magazine community to the House of Swing.	Actress Meg Ryan (above) shared some words about photography in magazines and presented the award for Photo Portfolio/Photo Essay to Jann Wenner of Rolling Stone (not pictured)

David Remnick, Editor, The New Yorker, received two Ellies one for Public Interest and another for Columns and Commentary	Ted Genoways, Editor, Virginia Quarterly Review, accepted an award for General Excellence under 100,000 circulation and for Fiction
David Clarke, Editor, Golf, was presented his Ellie for Leisure Interests by Martha Stewart, Founder, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia	Evan Smith, Editor, Texas Monthly, presented the award for Personal Service to Lucy Danziger, Editor-in-Chief, Self
Jim Kelly, Managing Editor, TIME won an Ellie for General Excellence over 2,000,000 circulation and Single-topic Issue	Chris Johns, Editor-in-Chief, National Geographic, received an award for General Excellence Online
Lewis Lapham, Editor, Harpers, received Ellies for General Excellence 100,000 to 250,000 circulation and Reviews and Criticism	Nancy Novogrod, Editor-in-Chief, Travel + Leisure, presented the award for General Excellence 250,000 to 500,000 circulation to Adam Moss, Editor-in-Chief, New York. New York was also won an Ellie for Design
Jonathan Dorn, Editor-in-Chief, Backpacker celebrates his Ellie for Magazine Section	Mark Whitaker presented an Ellie for General Excellence 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 circulation to Gary Hoenig, Editor-in-Chief, ESPN the Magazine
