As Vice President of Digital Publishing at Adobe, Dan Baum oversees the company’s Digital Publishing Platform, which consists of applications, technologies, and services that allow publishers to cost effectively author, produce, and distribute groundbreaking content to the broadest possible audience on a wide variety of digital devices. During his tenure at Adobe, he has focused on innovation and has led several new business initiatives. Before joining Adobe, Baum was the Executive Vice President of Operations and Founder of Shutterfly, where he led the design and development of the industry’s first fully automated digital printing infrastructure, and led product and feature innovations. Previously, Baum spent 12 years at SGI. He has also worked at Convergent Technologies.

MATT BEAN, Brand Editor, Men’s Health & Women’s Health
Matt Bean is the brand editor for Men’s Health and Women’s Health. As brand editor, he has launched more than 20 mobile applications, and oversaw the creation and launch of the publisher’s first-to-market iPad platform. Bean was awarded the “Best Interactive Tool” award in 2010 by the American Society of Magazine Editors, nominated for “Best Mobile Application,” and was nominated in 2006 for his work with the magazine’s Malegrams section. He writes the “Guy Next Door” column for Women’s Health. Bean also hosts "The Playbook," a weekly show for Spike TV.

DAVE BLAIS, Executive Vice President and President of Magazines & Catalogs, Quad/Graphics
As Executive Vice President and President of Magazines & Catalogs for Quad/Graphics, Dave Blais oversees the company’s magazine and catalog operating unit (including Special Interest Publications) and Paper Services function. His experience in developing successful strategies around the needs of clients and Quad's unique manufacturing capabilities has played an integral part in the profitable growth of the company. In his 26 years with Quad, Blais has worked in various departments throughout the company, holding roles in Imaging, Press, Finishing, Customer Service, Scheduling and Marketing. He first joined Quad/Graphics' Corporate Training program in 1984. Prior to joining Quad/Graphics, Blais worked in a management role at BookCrafters, Inc. and held various roles in small commercial printing operations.
DAVID CAREY, President, Hearst Magazines
David Carey was named president of Hearst Magazines in June 2010. Prior to joining Hearst, Carey was group president at Condé Nast, where he oversaw the company’s media properties targeted to business and executive audiences. He was also a member of the company's executive committee and co-lead on all Condé Nast business development efforts. He led the 2007 print/digital startup of Portfolio and Portfolio.com, and has served as vice president and publisher of the The New Yorker, publisher for the 1995 re-launch of House & Garden, and founding publisher of SmartMoney. Carey was named industry “Executive of the Year” by Adweek and was selected by Folio as a member of its “Dream Team” of publishing executives.
SUSAN CASEY, Editor-in-Chief, O, The Oprah Magazine
Susan Casey was named editor-in-chief of O, The Oprah Magazine in July 2009. She previously served as development editor of Time Inc., where she worked on new concepts for the women’s market in both print and online. Prior to that, she was editor-in-chief of Sports Illustrated Women and, before that, editor-at-large for Time Inc. She has also been creative director of Outside. Casey is the author of the New York Times bestseller The Devil’s Teeth: A True Story of Obsession and Survival Among America’s Great White Sharks. Her second book, The Wave, will be published in 2010.

ANDREW W. CLURMAN, President and Chief Operating Officer, Active Interest Media, Inc.
As President and Chief Operating Officer, Andy Clurman is directly responsible for the overall management of AIM’s magazines, consumer shows, conferences, book and video publishing, and internet businesses. AIM‘s 32 special interest magazines include award-winning titles such as Yoga Journal, Backpacker, American Cowboy, Log Home Living, Vegetarian Times, Yachts International, and Black Belt. The company produces a dozen log home shows and seminars as well as four week-long Yoga conferences around the country. AIM also operates Show Management in Ft. Lauderdale and produces major in-water boat shows in Florida, including the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show, the largest boat show in the world. In addition to its own brands, AIM custom publishes magazines for a number of leading US companies including Vail Resorts, Whole Foods, The Vitamin Shoppe, and Kroger.

RITA COHEN, Senior Vice President/Legislative and Regulatory Policy, MPA
Rita Cohen has been Senior Vice President/Legislative and Regulatory Policy for MPA since 1999. Cohen is responsible for MPA policy regarding state and local government actions, taxation for magazines, environmental matters and consumer protection including privacy and marketing practices. Cohen has played a key role in MPA's successful efforts to keep postal rates for magazines as low as possible. She was a major witness for MPA in the last two rate cases before the Postal Rate Commission, and is currently leading the industry efforts to find long-lasting solutions to stop escalating postal prices.

CHUCK CROFT, Executive Vice President, Kalmbach Publishing Company
Chuck Croft is Executive Vice President of Kalmbach Publishing Co. Kalmbach is entering its 75th year of publishing in special-interest and leisure-time markets, and has a family of 15 magazines and related content rich web sites, books and events. Croft has been with Kalmbach for 10 years and oversees strategic planning and new product development, in addition to managing the company’s financial and operational areas.
SCOTT DADICH, Creative Director, WIRED and Executive Director, Digital Magazine Development, Condé Nast
Scott Dadich is the creative director of Condé Nast's WIRED, where he oversees design, photography, and production for the magazine. In addition, as Executive Creative Director, Digital Magazine Development, he is leading the creative efforts to build digital editions of Condé Nast's titles for electronic reading devices. Dadich has received more than 100 national design and editorial awards, and is the only magazine professional in history to have won both the National Magazine Award for Design and the Society of Publication Designers Magazine of the Year award three consecutive years in a row: 2008, 2009, and 2010. He was previously creative director of Texas Monthly.
RICHARD EATON, Vice President, Consumer Operations, Highlights for Children, Inc.
As the VP of Operations at Highlights for Children, Richard Eaton is responsible for Consumer Business operations including order management, promotional and product procurement, distribution, postal affairs, customer service and customer experience initiatives for Highlights magazines, book clubs and other products. Eaton has more than 27 years of experience managing complex operations through both internal groups and external business partners. His past roles included management of recycling operations for Anheuser-Busch for nine years and quality control management for the Raytheon Corporation for six years.

She is also QMT’s liaison to the publishing industry and provides strategic input into market research and product development strategies in context with Qualcomm’s innovative and award-winning display technology, mirasol. RICH GORDON, Professor and Director of Digital Innovation, Medill School of Journalism
Rich Gordon is professor and director of digital innovation at the Medill School of Journalism, where he launched and has overseen the school’s graduate program in interactive publishing. He was the first online director for the Miami Herald Publishing Co., overseeing editorial and business operations. Before that he worked as reporter, bureau chief and editor for newspapers in Virginia and Florida, where he was one of the early leaders in computer-assisted reporting.

Jack Griffin is Chief Executive Officer of Time Inc., the world’s leading publishing company. He will also assume the role of Chairman at the end of 2010. John Q. Griffin oversees the English-language editions of National Geographic, National Geographic Adventure, National Geographic Traveler, National Geographic Kids and National Geographic Little Kids magazines. Under his leadership, National Geographic won the prestigious National Magazine Award in the category of general excellence for a publication with circulation over 2 million in 2010, 2008, and 2007. NGM.com's Web site won both the Webby Award and the People's Voice Award for best magazine Web site in 2008. Prior to joining the National Geographic Society, Griffin was Executive Vice President and COO of Hearst Magazines International in New York; from 1990 to 2000 he was President of the magazine division at Rodale Inc.
MORGAN P. GUENTHER, President and Chief Executive Officer, Next Issue Media
Morgan Guenther is president and CEO of Next Issue Media, the digital publishing initiative of Condé Nast, Hearst, Meredith, News Corporation and Time Inc. Joining the venture in June 2010, he is responsible for executing the venture's mission to develop open standards for a new digital storefront and related technology that will allow consumers to enjoy their favorite media content on portable digital devices. Before joining Next Issue Media, Mr. Guenther served as chairman and chief executive officer of AirPlay, a wireless entertainment services company. Prior to this position, he was with TiVo Inc. as president from 2001 through 2003 and before that as vice president and senior vice president of Business Development and Revenue Operations.

SAVANNAH GUTHRIE, NBC News White House Correspondent; Co-Anchor, MSNBC’s “The Daily Rundown”
Savannah Guthrie was named NBC News White House Correspondent in December 2008. She is based in Washington, D.C. and contributes to all NBC News properties, including "NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams," "Today" and MSNBC. She also co-anchors “The Daily Rundown” with Chuck Todd on MSNBC. Prior to joining NBC News in 2007, Guthrie worked for Court TV as the legal affairs correspondent based in Washington, D.C. and before that as a national trial correspondent. She joined Court TV from the law firm of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer and Feld where she practiced law. Earlier in her career she held reporter and anchor positions in Washington, D.C., Tucson, and Columbia, MO.

LARRY HACKETT, Managing Editor, PEOPLE
As PEOPLE’s Managing Editor, Larry Hackett oversees all editorial operations for the weekly magazine. Under his leadership, PEOPLE and People.com were both nominated for National Magazine Awards in 2008. In his previous role as deputy managing editor, he strengthened the magazine’s celebrity and hard news reporting, helped develop the first editions of PEOPLE’s Hollywood Daily, and served as the magazine’s primary spokesperson. He joined PEOPLE in 1998 as a senior editor, and has served as assistant managing editor and executive editor. Hackett previously held positions at the New York Daily News, the Morristown Daily Record and the Newark Star-Ledger. In 2010, Hackett was named President of ASME.

Kristian Hammond is Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the McCormick School of Engineering at Northwestern University, and Director of Northwestern’s Center for Innovation in Technology, Media and Journalism. His research focuses on intelligent information systems that attend to user context in automatically searching for information and media, and providing results to those users in powerful and interesting new ways. More recently, he has been focused on the automatic generation of content in the form of both text and rich media. Hammond is an author of over 100 papers and has served on numerous program committees as well as the Chicago Mayor’s Advisory Council on Technology.
TOM HARTY, President, National Media Group, Meredith Corporation
Tom Harty was named President of Meredith’s National Media Group in August 2010, and is responsible for all current National Media Group activities around the country. Since joining Meredith in 2003 he has been a major contributor to the Group’s success, and has played a key leadership role in the development and execution of the Vision 2013 strategic initiative. Under Harty’s leadership the National Media Group has increased its share of magazine industry advertising revenues for five consecutive years to an all-time high of 12.3 percent. Harty previously held key positions at The Golf Digest Companies, TV Guide, Reader’s Digest, McCall’s, Forbes and Gruner & Jahr USA.
JOHN HEILEMANN, National Political Columnist and Correspondent, New York
John Heilemann writes “The Power Grid” column for New York magazine, as well as longer features. An award-winning journalist and author, he has covered politics, business, and their intersection for nearly two decades, in America and abroad. His book about the 2008 presidential election, Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin, and the Race of a Lifetime, coauthored with TIME’s Mark Halperin, spent seven weeks in the #1 spot on the New York Times best seller list. Heilemann is a former correspondent and columnist for The Economist and Wired and a former staff writer for The New Yorker.
CHRIS HERCIK, Creative Director, Sports Illustrated Group
Chris Hercik is just the sixth Creative Director in the history of the Sports Illustrated franchise. Hercik was hired as Deputy Art Director in 2002 and became the franchise’s Art Director in 2005. He has been recognized with the Gold Medal of Excellence from the Society of Publication Designers and worked on the past seven Swimsuit issues as well as the magazine redesign in 2009. Hercik’s latest promotion came in conjunction with the debut of Sports Illustrated: The Digital Edition for the iPad. Hercik’s fingerprints are all over the key features of the iPad app, including “The Wheel” and the Nav Bar.
KEMPTON IZUNO, Co-Founder and CEO, Bitmenu
Bitmenu’s co-founder and CEO, Kempton Izuno, has over 25 years technology industry experience in executive positions driving sales and marketing teams at BEA/Weblogic, SGI, Autodesk, and IBM. Prior to Bitmenu, Izuno consulted in the high tech industry and recently served as guest faculty for New Media at the Stanford Publishing Courses.

Andrew Jung was previously Senior Director of Advertising and Media for the Kellogg Company where he oversaw all strategic buying for 33 national brands across a budget of more than $500 million. He began his Kellogg marketing career heading the development and national launch of Kellogg’s Raisin Bran Crunch in 1999. Prior to Kellogg’s, he spent six years as U.S. Marketing and Product Management Director for Golden Books Family Entertainment. He began his career as an Account Executive at Tatham, Laird & Kudner in Chicago where he worked on the Nabisco, Coors and Dean Foods accounts. JASON KILAR, Chief Executive Officer, Hulu Jason Kilar joined Hulu after nearly a decade of experience at Amazon.com where he served in a variety of key leadership roles. After writing the original business plan for Amazon's entry into the video and DVD businesses, he ultimately became Vice President and General Manager of Amazon's North American media businesses, which included the company's books, music, video, and DVD categories. He later served as Senior Vice President, Worldwide Application Software, where he led an organization of hundreds of world-class technologists. Kilar began his career with The Walt Disney Company, where he worked for Disney Design & Development.

DAVID KIRKPATRICK, Author, The Facebook Effect
David Kirkpatrick was for many years the senior editor for internet and technology at Fortune magazine. While at Fortune, he wrote cover stories about Apple, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Sun, and numerous other technology subjects. Beginning in 2001, he created Fortune’s Brainstorm conference series. More recently, he organized the Techonomy conference on the centrality of technology innovation for all human activity. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and appears frequently on television, radio, and the Internet as an expert on technology. At the 2008 MPA “Magazines 24/7” digital conference, Kirkpatrick was featured interviewing Facebook’s Owen Van Natta.

From 2003 through 2006, he worked for Bertelsmann in publishing, working in Barcelona and New York City.

David Link is co-founder, with Joe McCambley, of The Wonderfactory, the New York-based experience design firm that wowed the world last year with its video demo showing what the Sports Illustrated experience could be on an iPad. Since then, TWF has worked on Tablet projects for Time, People, Fortune, The Weather Channel, Travel + Leisure, Food and Wine, Departures, Executive Travel, Better Homes & Gardens, as well as many other projects for Barnes & Noble. Much of their work today focuses on helping their clients’ advertisers take full advantage of the tablet form factor and capabilities. Previously, Link was VP Creative Director at America Online and, before that, Executive Creative Director for Europe for Modem Media.

Under Link's leadership, MPA has played a pivotal role in providing digital resources and training to its membership. Edward C. Malthouse is the Theodore R. and Annie Laurie Sills Professor of Integrated Marketing Communications at Northwestern University and has been the co-editor of the Journal of Interactive Marketing since 2005. Joe McCambley is co-founder, with David Link, of The Wonderfactory, the New York-based experience design firm that wowed the world last year with its video demo showing what the Sports Illustrated experience could be on an iPad. Since then, TWF has worked on Tablet projects for Time, People, Fortune, The Weather Channel, Travel + Leisure, Food and Wine, Departures, Executive Travel, Better Homes & Gardens, as well as many other projects for Barnes & Noble. Much of TWF’s work today focuses on helping their clients’ advertisers take full advantage of the tablet form factor and capabilities. Previously, McCambley ran the internal creative organization at America Online and, before that, was Chief Creative Officer at both Digitas and Modem Media.
RACHEL DAVIS MERSEY, Assistant Professor, Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism
Rachel Davis Mersey uses quantitative and qualitative research strategies to examine journalism in light of the changing media environment. She aims to improve the practice of journalism in a manner that enhances publications’ relationships with their audiences by understanding their identities. Her research has been published in journals across a variety of disciplines and presented at academic and industry conferences. She recently published her first book, Can Journalism Be Saved? Rediscovering America’s Appetite for News. Previously, as a features reporter for the Arizona Republic, she helped launch a weekly tabloid which won Gannett’s Innovator Drive for Excellence Award.

Sara Öhrvall is currently the Director of Research & Development for Bonnier Corp. Abe Peck has enjoyed a productive career as both educator and media professional, specializing in magazines – now Magazines 2.0. Peck taught full-time at Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism for 27 years before relocating to Santa Barbara in 2008. He remains involved with Medill as its first Director of B2B Communication and as Professor Emeritus in Service. He is also a Senior Director of the Media Management Center. Peck is on the editorial boards of Miller-McCune and Santa Barbara NewSource, and has held positions at Rolling Stone, Outside and Satisfaction, among others, and has written for numerous magazines. Robert A. Sauerberg, Jr. is charged with overseeing Condé Nast’s migration to a technology-enabled, consumer-centric, and brand-focused business model. Sauerberg was formerly Group President of Consumer Marketing. From December 2001 until September 2005, he was COO of Fairchild Publications, Inc. Prior to that, he was Fairchild’s SVP and CFO. Sauerberg also spent 18 years with The New York Times Company. Sauerberg represents Condé Nast on the board of CMG and also serves on the Executive Committee of MPA. HOWARD SCHULTZ, President, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Starbucks Corporation
Howard Schultz first walked into Starbucks in Seattle’s Pike Place Market in 1981. He joined Starbucks in 1982 as director of operations and marketing when Starbucks had four stores. In 1983, a trip to Italy prompted a vision to bring the Italian coffeehouse tradition to Seattle. After leaving to start his own coffee company, Schultz purchased Starbucks in August 1987 with local investors. He went on to create two landmark programs for Starbucks partners (employees): comprehensive health coverage for part-time partners and equity in the company in the form of stock options. From that foundation, Starbucks has grown to more than 16,000 stores in neighborhoods around the world.
